Passports for minors

Passports for minors i.e. individuals who are not of legal age

All Italian minors traveling abroad must have a personal travel document.

In order to apply for a passport in this Chancellery , the minor must be registered with the AIRE at this Consular Chancellery and have up-to-date personal data on the Fast It portal. For instructions regarding requests for the registration of birth certificates, including those of minors, please refer to the relevant Civil Status (Vital Records) page.

Passport validity

Passport validity varies based on age:

  • For minors under 3 years of age, passports are valid for at most 3 years.
  • For minors aged 3 to 18 years, passports are valid for at most 5 years.

Appointment Booking

Appointments must be booked through the Prenot@Mi portal no earlier than six (6) months before the passport expiration date, with sufficient advance notice. Waiting times may be longer before summer and major holidays.

The minor must be present at the Consular Chancellery on the day of the appointment, accompanied by at least one parent.
For minors aged 12 and above, fingerprints will be taken.

Parental Consent

The passport application for a minor must be accompanied by the consent of both parents/legal guardians. If one of the parents is not present on the day of the appointment with the Chancellery, an official consent form is required.

In cases where one parent or legal guardian refuses to grant consent for the minor’s passport issuance, the other parent can request the intervention of the Consul as a guardian (Articles 33 and 34 of Legislative Decree 71/2011).
