NOTICE: NEW PENALTIES FOR FAILURE TO REGISTER WITH A.I.R.E.
Welcome to the section dedicated to consular services.
Consular services are provided exclusively on the basis of residence. To check which consulate is the right one to contact, have a look at our consular network.
The Consular Office at the Embassy in Washington DC is responsible for providing consular services for Italian and foreign citizens residing in the District of Columbia; in Maryland, only Montgomery and Prince George’s counties (all other counties fall under the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia); in Virginia, only Arlington and Fairfax counties, the City of Alexandria, the City of Falls Church, and the City of Fairfax (all other counties fall under the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia).
For ease of browsing, we have divided the various services provided into two sections, those for Italian citizens and those for foreign citizens.
Each menu option contains useful information to request specific services and the email address to write to if you have any questions.
Some consular services require the payment of a consular fee, to be paid preferably in money orders, certified cashier’s checks, or by debit card*. Money orders and certified cashier’s checks must be made out to “Embassy of Italy, Washington DC” and include the reason for payment.
The fees for consular services are set out in the following tables:
- Current consular table pursuant to Legislative Decree 221/2016
- Consular table excerpt (3rd quarter 2024)
- Consular fee for issuing an Italian passport
- Consular fee for issuing an Italian Electronic Identity Card (C.I.E.)
- Consular fee for the renewal of an Italian driver license
- Consular fee for applying for recognition of Italian citizenship iure sanguinis
Happy browsing!
* Debit card payments are accepted only from the 1st through the 25th of each month. For the remaining days of the month, you must use another payment method for the service requested (cash, certified cashier’s check, money order). Currently, payment for visa applications cannot be made with a debit card.
