RENOUNCING ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP

The requirements to renounce Italian citizenship are as follows:

• Possess another citizenship, and
• Be registered with AIRE at this Consulate.

The following documents must be submitted:

• Original Birth Certificate issued by the Municipality where AIRE was registered within the last six months;
• Italian passport, if held, to be returned to the Consulate;
• Proof of another citizenship
  (e.g., valid passport, naturalization certificate, etc.);
• Proof of residence in the consular jurisdiction
  (e.g., driver’s license, utility bills, etc.);
• Proof of payment of €250 by bank transfer to:

On the day of the appointment, payment in US dollars of the consular fee for the application to renounce Italian Citizenship will also be required. Please note that payment can exclusively be completed in exact cash or via a money order made payable to the “Embassy of Italy, Washington DC”—as specified in Art. 4B of the consular fees table excerpt available in the “Consular Services and Visas” section of this website.

To renounce Italian citizenship, please write an email to washington.cittadinanza@esteri.it with the subject line:
“NAME and SURNAME – Renunciation of Italian Citizenship”
and attach a scan of the above-listed documentation in a single PDF file with a maximum file size of 5MB.

Upon receipt of the email with the complete documentation, an appointment will be scheduled at the Consulate.
You will need to bring all of the documentation listed above in its original form (i.e. no photocopies) to the Consulate on the day of your appointment.
