There are various ways to acquire Italian citizenship or be recognized as an Italian citizen, each involving specific requirements, documentation, and procedural steps.
You are therefore advised to carefully review the dedicated sections on this page to identify the procedure applicable to your specific case. To this end, it may be helpful to first consult the “Citizenship – Synthesis” page, which provides a general overview of the procedures.
We recommend that you:
- identify the citizenship procedure applicable to your case;
- carefully read the instructions provided in the relevant section;
- verify the required documentation and the application submission process.
Please note that booking an appointment via the Prenot@mi portal is NOT required for all citizenship procedures.
Specifically:
- for citizenship by descent (“iure sanguinis“), applications must be submitted according to the instructions in the relevant section and require a prior appointment booked via Prenot@mi;
- for other scenarios, please follow the specific instructions on the relevant page of reference, which outline the procedures, documentation, and—where applicable—subsequent steps regarding appointments scheduled with the Office.
Appointments at the Citizenship Office are NOT intended for consultation purposes.
We therefore ask applicants not to book appointments or initiate the process until they have clearly understood the procedure applicable to their case and have gathered all necessary documentation.
PLEASE NOTE
To allow the Office to process applications in an orderly manner, please consult the indicative processing times indicated for each procedure.
Except in special cases, it will not be possible to provide individual updates on the status of your application before the indicated deadlines have passed, nor will it be possible to individually confirm receipt of emails, postal packages, or other documentation on an individual basis within a short timeframe. Requests for updates may be considered once the indicative timeframe for the specific procedure has passed.
The Office does not provide individual advisory services. Information regarding requirements, documentation, submission procedures, and procedural stages is published in the relevant sections of the website for each case type. Emails containing general inquiries may not receive a personalized response.
