Italian citizens under the age of 14, duly registered with the AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad), who travel unaccompanied by their parents or legal guardians, must possess a certificate of accompaniment issued by this Consular Chancellery (Article 14, paragraph 2 of Law No. 1185 of November 21, 1967).
The certificate is limited to a single trip (round trip) outside the minor’s country of residence.
Parents can submit the request via email to pass.washington@esteri.it, attaching the following documentation:
- Declaration of accompaniment signed by both parents; parents must specify any transit countries;
- Copy of the minor’s passport;
- Copies of both parents’ passports;
- Copy of the accompanying person’s passport (or accompanying persons’ passports);
- Airline ticket.
The Passport Office of the Consular Chancellery will schedule an appointment for the issuance of the consular certificate. On the day of the appointment, at least one parent must be present and must submit all the original documentation and pay the consular fees amounting to 11.90 USD in cash.
Non-European Union citizen parents must appear in person at the Consulate. In case of impossibility, their signature on the authorization form must be authenticated by a notary public.
