REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

The interested party must present:

  • A valid government issued identity document issued by the authorities of the country of current citizenship;
  • Proof of residence in the Consular Office’s district;
  • Birth certificate:
    • If born in Italy, an extract of the birth certificate issued by the competent Italian municipality;
    • If born abroad, a birth certificate issued by the competent foreign authority, in the form required for registration in Italy, duly legalized/apostilled and translated into Italian;
  • For those born abroad, a historical residence certificate issued by the competent Italian municipality, demonstrating residence in Italy for at least two consecutive years;
  • A historical citizenship certificate, issued by the competent Italian municipality, demonstrating previous possession of Italian citizenship;
  • Appropriate documentation demonstrating the cause and date of loss of Italian citizenship, for example:
    • A naturalization certificate;
    • Or, where required by local practice, a birth certificate accompanied by a citizenship certificate and the relevant title of acquisition;
  • If the applicant was a minor at the time of naturalization, documentation relating to the parents’ status, if necessary, to reconstruct the circumstances of the case;
  • Any Italian documentation already in the applicant’s possession, even if expired;
  • If married, a copy of the marriage certificate, if relevant for updating marital status.

Further documentation may be requested based on the specific situation of the applicant.

Documents issued by foreign authorities must be produced in proper form, duly legalized or apostilled, where required, and translated into Italian.
