SUMMARY OF THE PROCEDURE

1. Gather all required documentation

First of all, you need to collect all the necessary documentation to support your application.

Please note that:

      • Every non-Italian document must be duly legalized according to the regulations in force in the country of issue (with an apostille, where applicable);
      • Every non-Italian document must be accompanied by an Italian translation;
      • Translations must reproduce, as far as possible, the content and layout of the original document;
      • It is recommended not to use characters sizes smaller than 10 points.

 

2. Complete the application correctly

Once you have gathered all the documentation, you must:

      • complete the application form in its entirety;
      • sign it according to the instructions provided;
      • verify that all the documentation is complete and correctly prepared.

 

3. Book an appointment on the Prenot@mi portal

Only after having gathered all the documents and correctly prepared the application should the applicant book an appointment through the Prenot@mi portal.
The applicant’s physical presence at the Consular Office is NOT required.

 

4. Print the appointment confirmation

After receiving the appointment confirmation, you will need to print it and include it in the mailing package.

 

5. Send the entire application package

The entire application package must be mailed to the following address:

Washington, D.C. 20008

The package will have to contain:

      • The printed appointment confirmation;
      • The completed and signed application form;
      • All required documentation;
      • Certified translations;
      • Prepaid, self-addressed US Postal Service Priority Mail envelope for the return of the documents submitted;
      • A money order for the correct fee amount due;
      • Proof of residence within the jurisdiction of the relevant consular office (e.g., current Real ID driver’s license, current utility bills);
      • Valid photo ID.

 

6. Please respect the appointment date for shipping.

The package must be postmarked with the same date as the booked appointment.

In the event of a documented emergency, a grace period of up to 30 days may be granted. In this case, the documentation proving the emergency must be enclosed with the printed appointment confirmation.

 

7. Shipping Methods

Any traceable shipping service may be used to send the package to this Consular Office.

Please note, however, that the return envelope included in the package must be USPS only.

 

8. Payment of the Consular Fee

Payment of the consular fee must be made exclusively by money order, made payable to:
Embassy of Italy-Washington, D.C.

The amount due will be the amount indicated on the website based on the date of the appointment.

 

9. Office Assistance

The Consular Office can provide assistance within the limits of its institutional competence.
Please note, however, that it cannot provide consulting services on the preparation of the application.
