Italian students and teachers at the Italian Embassy for “Storia e memorie” project

As part of the project “Storia e memorie” (history and memories), on Monday, July 11, the Embassy of Italy welcomed a group of 15 Italian students and 6 teachers from high schools in Sardinia and Friuli. The project is promoted by the “Commissione per la Biblioteca e l’Archivio Storico del Senato della Repubblica” (Commission for the Library and the Historical Archive of the Italian Senate) and implemented by the school network “Fri.Sa.Li world” which includes high schools of the Italian regions Friuli, Sardegna, Liguria e Piemonte.

The United States, specifically the cities of Washington, Miami, New York, has been identified as one of the 4 countries where three different groups of Italian students can conduct field research on the theme of Italian immigration during the 900. In Washington, DC students will attend a program of seminars for three weeks, elaborated by “The Italian American Museum of Washington DC”, Casa Italiana Sociocultural Center in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy, in which they will deepen:

  • the History of Italian Americans over the years
  • the problem of race and discrimination in Americahow
  • the US government works: Exploring the three branches of government “the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial – and the Role of the States”
  • the Italian America society through the evolution of Italian American Food and the Italian American Pop Culture

Students will have the opportunity to listen to some Italian immigrants who have been established themselves with commitment and sacrifice in the various sectors of American society.

The event was opened to the presence of a special guest, the honorable Kimberley A. Bassett, Secretary of State of Washington DC, who highlighted the strong bond of friendship between the two countries and the twinning between the city of Washington and Rome.

The Head of the Consular Chancery, First Counsellor Domenico Bellantone, also stressed the significative cooperation between the Embassy of Italy and District of Columbia government in the field of education, remembering the recent renewal of the memorandum between the Embassy and DC Public Schools, which confirmed the mutual commitment to promotion and expansion of Italian language and cultural education Italian programs in DC Public Schools.

The event was also attended by dr. Dr. Steve Livengood, from United States Capitol Historical Society, who gave an overview of the history of the city of Washington from the beginning.
