Year-Ahead Preview at the National Gallery of Art of Washington D.C. for 2018/2019: focus on Tintoretto

The National Gallery of Art (NGA) presented yesterday during a press conference the main exhibitions which will be hosted during the next season 2018-2019. This is an exceptional season for Italian art in the US Nation capital. In fact, more than ten exhibitions on Italian artists and art have been organized by the prestigious American museum Institution in collaboration with major Italian museums and cultural institutions.

The Ambassador of Italy to the US, Armando Varricchio, took the floor to present to the public present (more than 70 Italian and international journalists) five exhibitions already on the books. In particular, there will be three exhibitions on Jacopo Tintoretto (1518 / 1519-1594) on the 500th anniversary of his birth. The first, “Tintoretto: artist of Renaissance Venice”, in collaboration with the Venice Civic Museums Foundation and le Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice has already opened to the public at the Palazzo Ducale in Venice and will arrive at the NGA in March 2019. It is the first retrospective of the artist in North America and will host about 50 paintings and more than a dozen works on paper, including many significant international loans traveling to the U.S. for the first time. It is flanked by two exhibitions on the Venetian artist, entitled “Venetian Prints in the Time of Tintoretto” and “Drawing in Tintoretto’s Venice”, this last one organized in collaboration with the Morgan Library & Museum.

The Ambassador also announced the exhibition “Andrea Del Verrocchio: sculptor-painter of Renaissance Florence” scheduled for next March at the Bargello and Palazzo Strozzi National Museum and, subsequently, at the NGA. The exhibition brings together for the first time the superb masterpieces of Andrea del Verrocchio, one of the greatest masters of the Quattrocento, alongside a series of cworks by artists such as Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio and his most famous pupil, Leonardo da Vinci, whose 500th anniversary of death will occur in 2019.

In October, the exhibition “The Chiaroscuro Woodcut in Renaissance Italy” will be inaugurated, organized in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

During his speech Ambassador Varricchio underlined how “Italy and the United States enjoy a deep bond and cultural cooperation has always been paramount to us both” and evoked “the key role played by the NGA in bringing the American and international public closer to our rich and varied Italian artistic heritage.”. A relationship that also rejoices in the excellent collaboration between the NGA and the Embassy of Italy, which, as recalled by Earl A. Powell Director of the American Institution, represents a “vital partner”.
