An Italian tax code (codice fiscale, or CF for short) is essential to carry out financial transactions in Italy: property, inheritance, employment, opening a bank account, or university enrollment.
It can be issued to nationals of any country. Italian citizens can request it through the FAST-IT portal (see below).
This service of the Consular Office is free of charge and is available to private individuals over the age of 18 who reside in this Embassy’s consular jurisdiction.
- Procedures are different depending on whether you are an Italian citizen or not.
- Processing a request can take up to 30 days once all the required documentation has been received.
- Each individual applicant must submit an individual request on FAST-IT. In the event of difficulties, each individual set of documents may be submitted in a single compressed PDF, or by mail as listed below.
ITALIAN CITIZENS
If you are an Italian citizen, currently residing in our jurisdiction and AIRE registered*, you must submit your request through FAST-IT.
In the event of difficulties, you may visit the link below, download the current form (AA4/8), and send it back via email in a single compact/compressed PDF that includes:
- Form AA4/8, which can be downloaded from the website of the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate): https://www.agenziaentrate.gov.it/portale/web/guest/schede/istanze/richiesta-ts_cf/modello-e-istruzioni-cf-aa4_8/aa48-inglese
- Copy of your valid Italian passport (biodata page);
- prepaid/self-addressed USPS PRIORITY MAIL envelope for return of certificate (address on label must match that of your AIRE registration). If you would like the ensuing certificate sent to you via email, clearly state this in your transmittal and identify the exact email address you want it sent to.
Email the SINGLE COMPACT PDF to statocivile.washington@esteri.it
*Make sure that your AIRE registration is up-to-date before sending your request. You may update your information via the FAST-IT portal.
Fill out PART B – Personal details of the AA4/8 form carefully as per your Italian ID.
If the applicant is under 18 years of age, both parents must complete and sign the form, as well as include copies of both their IDs and that of the minor.
NON-ITALIAN CITIZENS
Foreign citizens residing in our consular district, for whom the issuance of a Tax Code (C.F.) is necessary for identification purposes in dealings with the Italian Government, or for tax obligations, and who, in relation to the activity to be carried out, do not need to enter Italy, may request their Tax Code through this Embassy by submitting the following documents:
- Form AA4/8, which can downloaded from this website: https://www.agenziaentrate.gov.it/portale/web/guest/schede/istanze/richiesta-ts_cf/modello-e-istruzioni-cf-aa4_8/aa48-inglese;
- Codice Fiscale application form for non-Italian citizens – please pay attention to the details;
- Copy of your birth certificate (if not in English or Italian, with a certified translation thereof into English or Italian);
- Passport (copy of the biodata page);
- Current proof of residence within this jurisdiction;
- Prepaid/self-addressed USPS PRIORITY MAIL envelope to return the certificate (address on label must match that of proof of residence);
- Copy of the prepaid/self-addressed envelope.
Fill out PART B – Personal details of the AA4/8 form carefully. Usually, it is the name on the birth certificate UNLESS you have legally changed your name, in which case use the one on your current valid photo ID.
If the fulfillment of obligations or procedures with the Italian Civil Service requires the entry and presence of the non-EU citizen in Italy, the issuance of the Tax Code (C.F.) must be requested at the Immigration Office (Sportello Unico dell’Immigrazione) or the Police Headquarters (Questura) where the residence permit application will be submitted.
For matters unrelated to dealings with the Italian Civil Service, the request for a Tax Code must be made directly by the individual concerned or through his or her representatives in Italy.
