Tax Identification Number or Tax code (codice fiscale)

An Italian Tax Identification Number, sometimes referred to as tax code, (codice fiscale, or CF for short) is essential to carry out financial transactions in Italy: for example trasactions involving property, inheritance, employment, opening a bank account, or university enrollment.

The Tax Identification Number can be issued to nationals of any country. Italian citizens can request it through the FAST-IT portal (see below).

This service of the Consular Office is free of charge and is available to private individuals over the age of 18 who reside in this Embassy’s consular jurisdiction.

  • Procedures are different depending on whether you are an Italian citizen or not.
  • Processing a request can take up to 30 days once all the required documentation has been received.
  • Each individual applicant must submit an individual request on FAST-IT. In the event of difficulties, each individual set of documents may be submitted in a single compressed PDF, or by mail as listed below.

PLEASE NOTE:
Students must contact the Italian university where they are enrolling, before applying for a Tax Identification Number through this Consular Office.
Many universities have specific agreements with the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate) that handle Tax Identification Number applications for foreign students.
