Jonathan Karl, a prominent journalist and well-known face of ABC News, is the new winner of the Urbino Award. The announcement was made by the Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, during an event she hosted last night at Villa Firenze in Washington.

“Journalism is an essential element in the life of our democracies: It helps the public understand reality, the facts around us, by distinguishing real news from fake news,” the Ambassador emphasized. “Quality journalism, like that of Jonathan Karl, plays an irreplaceable role and deserves to be recognized and supported,” she added. Zappia reaffirmed her support for the Urbino Award, which recognizes and celebrates excellence in American journalism. Karl will receive the award at the Ducal Palace in Urbino in March 2025.

“We are proud that the Urbino Award has reached its eighteenth edition and that it energetically brings the name of our city to the United States. We thank the Ambassador of Italy in Washington, Mariangela Zappia, for the great support she has provided to the project. The award has great potential for tourism promotion and for Italian businesses with a presence in the USA. As the municipal administration, it will be our responsibility to provide maximum support to ensure its future growth,” said Francesco Guazzolini, the City Council Member for Tourism and Internationalization.

A correspondent with extensive experience, Jonathan Karl has interviewed key figures in American politics over the past thirty years. During the event in Washington, Karl discussed the major challenges facing the world of information today in a public conversation with Viviana Mazza, the U.S. correspondent for Corriere della Sera.

The event also featured remarks from the founder of the Urbino Award, Giovanni Lani, and the Head of the Cultural Office of the City of Urbino, Gabriele Cavalera. Many past award recipients attended as well, including Thomas Friedman, Wolf Blitzer, Helene Cooper, Courtney Kube, Mark Mazzetti, and Ellen Nakashima, along with other distinguished Italian and American journalists, as well as U.S. government officials.
