HOW TO SUBMIT THE APPLICATION

How to submit the application

The application for recognition of Italian citizenship by descent (iure sanguinis)  must be submitted exclusively by mail, within 30 days of scheduling an appointment with the Citizenship Office through the Prenot@mi portal.

The appointment date is the formal date of reference for submitting the application and initiating the procedure. The applicant’s physical presence at the Consulate is not required.

Booking through Prenot@mi is a necessary step in submitting the application. Requests submitted spontaneously outside of the procedure indicated by the Office will not be processed.

Before scheduling an appointment, we recommend carefully checking the following:

  • that you actually fall within one of the categories regulated by current legislation;
  • that you have correctly identified the citizenship transmission line;
  • that the documentation is complete, consistent, and compliant with the published instructions.

 

The application must be submitted completed in all of its elements. Applications that are incomplete or accompanied by non-compliant documentation will not be processed and may require a new appointment.

The Citizenship Office reserves the right to request additional documentation if necessary to verify eligibility.

The service is provided exclusively on a residency basis. Before scheduling an appointment, applicants must verify that their residence falls within the consular jurisdiction of this Office.

All communications regarding the application will be sent to the email address provided by the applicant in the application. Therefore, it is recommended that you carefully enter a correct and regularly monitored email address.

The application is subject to payment of the consular fee required for the recognition of Italian citizenship by descent, which is due regardless of the outcome of the application and is non-refundable in the event of denial. This fee is subject to periodic updates; therefore, please check the current fee on the Embassy website at the time of submission.

Following the submission of the application, the applicant will receive notification of the initiation of the procedure. The legal deadline for processing the application is 730 days.

Upon completion of the investigation, the Consular Office will formally communicate the outcome of the procedure to the applicant.
