Michael Weisskopf, senior correspondent for TIME, has broken numerous stories from Washington, including Vice President Dick Cheney’s list of lobbyists before his energy task force, the smoking-gun letter of FBI whistle-blower Coleen Rowley, President Bill Clinton’s deal with prosecutors and Arthur Andersen’s shredding of Enron documents. He joined TIME in 1997.

While reporting TIME’s “Person of the Year” story in December 2003, Weisskopf grabbed and attempted to throw a live Iraqi hand grenade from a U.S. Army humvee, saving himself, TIME’s photographer and four soldiers, but losing his right hand. His book, Blood Brothers, is the story of his injury, recovery from that incident.

Before joining TIME, Weisskopf spent 20 years at the Washington Post, where he covered money in politics, the environment and the Pentagon. He was the paper’s correspondent in China and covered the hostage crisis in Iran. Prior to the Post, Weisskopf covered politics and government for the Baltimore Sun.

In addition to Blood Brothers, Weisskopf co-authored two books: Truth At Any Cost, on the Kenneth Starr probe, and Tell Newt To Shut Up, about the 1995 Republican revolution in Congress.

For his work in Iraq, Weisskopf won the National Headliners Award, the Daniel Pearl Award For Courage and Integrity in Journalism, the National Press Foundation’s Chairman’s Citation, Overseas Press Club honorable mention, Niarchos Prize for Survivorship, Urbino (Italy) Award and two nominations for the National Magazine Award. He has also received numerous national awards, including the Goldsmith Award for investigative reporting, the George Polk Award for national coverage, the Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for distinguished reporting of Congress and the Henry R. Luce Award. In 1996 he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.

Weisskopf received his M.A. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and his B.A. from George Washington University. He is fluent in Chinese.

Weisskopf lives in Washington with the professional singer Rebekah Edminster and their three children.
