Washington, D.C., October 14, 2018 –The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) celebrated the bonds between Italy and the United States in its annual Gala yesterday. From politics to the economy, culture to industrial collaboration, from scientific-technological research to innovation and on to space – there are no areas of US-Italian collaboration untouched by excellence.
NIAF Gala’s 43rd edition featured Puglia as the Region of Honor. Puglia Region President Michele Emiliano, along with an institutional delegation and local entrepreneurs, was present. Together, they undertook a visit to the United States and participated in Columbus Day celebrations in New York. Other Italian authorities included Senator Francesca Alderisi and The Hon. Francesca La Marca.
Confindustria President Vincenzo Boccia, Angel Holding Managing Director Vito Pertosa, Bristol-Myers Squibb Chairman and CEO Giovanni Caforia, Kiton Group CEO Antonio De Matteis and renowned cookbook author and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich were also present and were recognized by NIAF for their contribution to the strengthening of ties between Italy and the United States.
The Ambassador of Italy Varricchio noted that “a key part of the vibrant bond which joins Italy and the United States is this, the invaluable contribution of the Italian-American community that integrated so well in the United States, yet at the same time kept solid and dynamic relations with Italy in all areas.” NIAF’s busy agenda also included the opening of a museum on Italian immigration and an exhibit of products from the many Apulian businesses working in the food and wine industry which have brought to Washington a taste of Italian excellence.
