SUMMARY OF THE PROCEDURE’S STEPS

To help you understand the process for acquiring Italian citizenship by marriage, iure matrimonii, here is a summary of the procedure’s steps.

1. Document prepaation

• • Certificate collection
  • Apostilles
  • Translations (if not performed by a sworn translator, their conformity must be certified by the Consulate)

2. Online application (CIVES)

• • Registration
  • Filling out of the application
  • Documents’ uploading

3. Consulate verification

• • Acceptance or rejection of the application
  • Possible summoning of the applicant

4. Summoning of the applicant

• • Presentation of the documents in their original form
  • Signature authentication

5. Investigation by the Ministry of the Interior 

• • Complete evaluation of the application (up to 24 months, extendable to 36)
  • No intervention by the Consulate at this stage

6. Decision

• • Notification via portal of the result of the investigation

7. Swearing ceremony 

• • the oath will be completed at the Consulate Within 6 months of the decision’s notification
