DEADLINE FOR DECLARATION
The application may be submitted:
- after 3 years from the date of marriage/civil union
- after 18 months if the spouses have born or adopted children.
If the spouse acquired Italian citizenship by marriage, the deadline starts from the date of acquisition of the Italian citizenship by marriage.
Citizenship by marriage (iure matrimonii) is not automatic.
The application is evaluated by the Ministry of the Interior within 24 months, extendable to up to 36 months.
