Washington, June 3, 2020. ISSNAF, the Foundation that brings together Italian scientists and researchers in North America, annually assigns the Young Investigator Awards in various disciplines to young Italian researchers working in North America, in recognition of their significant and innovative contribution in their field of research.
In 2020, the year marked by the Covid emergency that hit Italy as well as the USA, the Embassy of Italy decided to sponsor an award to recognize young researchers in all fields of research whose work has shown a potential for significant impact on the prevention, management and cure of COVID-19.
The Embassy’s decision is part of the consolidated collaboration with the Foundation with which it launched the #Italystaystrong fundraising campaign for the benefit of the Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute in Rome, the Sacco Hospital in Milan and the Cotugno in Naples, which in recent days has exceeded the threshold of half a million dollars.
This initiative will complement the historical ISSNAF awards, delivered at the Foundation’s annual meeting in October at the Italian Embassy in Washington under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic: the Franco Strazzabosco Award for research in engineering; the Mario Gerla Prize for computer science research; the Paola Campese Prize for leukemia research; and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I am very pleased to further strengthen the Embassy’s collaboration with ISSNAF – said Ambassador Varricchio. The establishment of this new award not only testifies to the strength of relations between the Italian institutions and the Foundation but I am sure it will highlight the precious contributions by our young researchers to defeat this enemy that has affected humanity whole “.
