REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

All documentation must be emailed to the Citizenship Office in digital format at washington.cittadinanza@esteri.it.

We recommend:

  • consolidating all documentation into a single PDF file, where possible;
  • using legible and complete scans (not photographs);
  • maintaining an adequate but normal resolution for the file, with total file size preferably no greater than 5 MB.

This step allows the Consular Office to conduct a preliminary review of all of the documentation and to notify you should there arise a need for additional documentation before the physical appointment.

The following documents, in their original form, must be submitted on the  day of the appointment:

  • Birth certificate transcription request form, dated and signed
  • Minor’s birth certificate issued by the competent authorities of the country of birth
    (long form, specifying the city of birth)
  • Italian translation of the birth certificate
  • Apostille of the birth certificate
  • Valid government issued identity document of each parent for each country of citizenship
  • Minor’s government issued identity document (if available)
  • Proof of residence within the geographical limits of this Consular Office’s district
  • Any documentation relating to the parents’ Vital Records (such as marital status or recognition of parentage rights).

Additional documentation may be requested based on the specific situation.

NOTE FOR PARENTS

Please note that all applicants submitting a request for a minor must have all previous civil status documents relevant to family status (e.g., marriage) registered with the competent Italian municipality.

Furthermore, for children born before the parents’ marriage or out of wedlock, a document certifying paternity (“acknowledgement of paternity” document), duly apostilled and accompanied by an Italian translation, must also be submitted.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Starting January 1, 2026, the €250 fee pursuant to Article 4, paragraph 1-bis of Law No. 91/1992, is no longer due to submit this declarations. This provision is not retroactive, thus it is not possible to request a refund of any fees paid before that date.

Any requests for reimbursement of the €250 payment made for applications submitted after January 1, 2026, via bank transfer to the Italian Ministry of the Interior must be submitted using the specific “Richiesta per rimborso contributo di cittadinanza” form (i.e. the citizenship contribution reimbursement request form).
The Consulate will forward the request to the relevant office at the Italian Ministry of the Interior.
