The Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, participated yesterday in the Columbus Day celebrations held in New York, together with the Vice President of the Italian Senate, Senator Licia Ronzulli, and the Vice President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Honorable Giorgio Mulè.
“Columbus Day is a special day for Italy in the United States: We celebrate the extraordinary contribution that Italian-Americans have made to the building of this country, to its success, and to the realization of the American dream,” commented the Ambassador. “The ties between Italy and the United States, based on shared principles and values – democracy, freedom, and human rights – are stronger than ever,” she added, highlighting how the presence of two prominent representatives of the Italian Parliament is a testament to this special partnership.
During the parade, which carried the Italian tricolor through the streets of New York, Zappia met with the Governor of the State of New York, Kathy Hochul, and the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Also notable was the significant presence of a large representation of Italian institutional bodies in New York and nine regional groups of Italea (the tourism promotion program for those with Italian roots launched by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation within the PNRR project), as well as the COMITES of New York, the Scuola d’Italia in New York, and the Italian flag throwers Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini.
