Italy protagonist of the future. President Mattarella participates in an Italy-United States Innovation Forum.

Washington, 16 October 2019. An Italy-United States Innovation Forum will be held in California at Stanford University on October 18, 2019. The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and by the Italian Trade Agency with the support of Confindustria, and in collaboration with the Schools of Materials Science and Engineering and Medicine of Stanford University. The Forum is part of the official visit to the United States by President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, who will attend the conference.

The conference, the first of its kind organized by Italy in the United States in general, will represent a strategic moment to strengthen relations between Italy and researchers in the scientific and technological fields. At the center of the symposium will be discussions between representatives of the Italian Hi-Tech sector and executives from Silicon Valley companies, along with scholars and students.

The Forum will represent an opportunity to encourage collaborations between researchers and leaders in advanced technological, industrial and scientific fields, and to further our understanding of academic research in a number of technical fields and the state of technological innovation in Italy and Silicon Valley.

The Dean of Stanford’s School of Engineering, Jennifer Widom will open the first session, which will include speeches by the Minister of Technological Innovation and Digitization Paola Pisano, the President of the “Research & Development” working group of Confindustria Daniele Finocchiaro and the President of the Italian Trade Agency, Carlo Ferro.

The Forum will then be divided into three panels respectively dedicated to “Big Data & Machine Learning in Life Sciences, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence”, “Advanced Manufacturing & Industry 4.0, Mobility & Smart Cities”, “Space Industry, Science & Technology” .

The results of the discussions of the three panels will be the subject of a report delivered in the presence of the President of the Republic and will be opened by Minister Pisano. Giorgio Metta, Director of the Italian Institute of Technology, Marco Pavone, Autonomous Systems Laboratory Director at Stanford and Giorgio Saccoccia, President of the Italian Space Agency will be the rapporteurs for the panels.

Subsequently, Enel CEO’s, Francesco Starace, and Nextdoor’s founder Nirav Tolia will illustrate their vision for the future of innovation, its impacts on economic and social development, the challenges to be faced and the opportunities to be seized. The symposium will feature an audience of students and professors, and representatives from Italian and American companies, research centers, universities and start-ups of the two countries, along with Silicon Valley investors as well as the Italian and American press.

The Dean of the Stanford School of Medicine, Lloyd B. Minor, will close the event.

In the afternoon the Forum will feature three round tables on business and research in the fields discussed in the morning panels.

On the margins of the Forum, the President of the Italian Republic will meet with the President of Stanford, Prof. Marc Tessier-Lavigne.
