On June 27th, the Embassy of Italy in Washington DC hosted the conference “Nurturing the World of Tomorrow. Sustainable Development to harmonize Life and Nature”, organized by Officine Maccaferri, an Italian company operating in the sector of civil, geotechnical and environmental engineering, on the occasion of its 140th anniversary. The roundtable provided an opportunity to discuss and search for possible solutions to the negative effects of global growth on world ecosystems.
The panel was composed by Kathleen Rogers from Earth Day Network, the explorer Alex Bellini, Professor Upmanu Lall from Columbia University and Ian Campbell, Head of North America at Officine Maccaferri. Anne Bowser from the Wilson Center moderated the discussion.
Issues of great importance to future generations were discussed during the conference, such as the need to find appropriate measures to prevent the growing challenges of climate change and environmental disasters.
“The increase of natural hazards as well as the impact of climate change constitute a growing threat to our lives, our welfare and our economy. Today, with this conference, we bring together insight, experience and research findings from different disciplines to discuss the challenge of balancing economic growth and environmental protection. Italy, once again, has much to contribute to this important discussion through the ingenuity, skill and experience of stakeholders such as Officine Maccaferri,” said Ambassador Varricchio in opening the conference.
“Reaching 140 years in business is an important milestone for our company. As the years have passed, we have done more and more in the area of environmental sustainability, and we are focusing on this for the future. Increased awareness in environmental matters allows us to propose projects which aim to provide ever-greater harmony between civilization and nature” noted company President Alessandro Maccaferri.
