Giorgio Armani (Piacenza 1934)
Giorgio Armani is one of the leading figures of the Made in Italy in fashion design, but he has also created Armani/Casa in 2000, bringing his signature style to the world of architecture. From the very beginning, his lifestyle range has reflected a constant dialogue between minimalism and décor as well as tradition and innovation. Hints of 1920s Oriental style, Art Déco, 1930s and 1940s aesthetics and shapes, elements and colors borrowed from nature guide his collections, designed to create elegant atmospheres and evoke a continuous play of references to the past and focus on the present. In the year 2000, the Guggenheim Museum in New York dedicated to him an important retrospective. In 2005, the first haute couture Giorgio Armani Privé collection was presented in Paris. In 2004, the Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio was established to meet the growing demand for bespoke design projects from private clients. In 2010, the first Armani Hotel opened at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, with the Armani Hotel Milano following a year later. In 2015, the designer celebrated his company’s 40th anniversary with the opening of the Armani/Silos exhibition space, and was appointed Special Ambassador to the Expo Milano. In 2017, Giorgio Armani established the Giorgio Armani Foundation to promote projects of social interest. Over the course of his career, Giorgio Armani has received national and international awards, including the titles of Commander, Grand Officer of the Order of Merit and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic as well as the French Legion of Honour. He also received the Award for Best International Designer and the Lifetime Achievement Award for menswear, art and fashion, both from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He also received a doctorate from London’s Royal College of Art, and honorary degrees from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, and the Politecnico di Milano.
“Interior design for me is the space of creativity, in which, from the combination of research, functionality, quality and hints of different worlds and cultures, the harmony of a timeless beauty comes into being.” (Giorgio Armani)
