The Italian Embassy celebrates Pride Month – Capital Pride with a virtual initiative on Twitter and Instagram

Washington DC (June 16 2020). On the occasion of Pride Month – Capital Pride (4-15 June 2020), the Embassy of Italy, together with those of Argentina, Canada, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Israel, Mexico, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, with the participation of the State Department and the Digital Diplomacy Coalition (DDC) group, launched a campaign on Twitter and Instagram on the rights of LGBTQ+ persons. Capital Pride DC also participated in the campaign amplifying the message.

The initiative consisted in a series of posts concerning the priority attributed by all the countries involved to the defense of the rights of LGBTQ+ persons and to the fight against all forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The initiative mirrors the positions of the Italian government most recently expressed on the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on 17 May.

A deliberately simple and direct message with the use of the hashtag #diplomacyunited4pride and in line with the social campaigns joined by the Italian Embassy in recent years. This is the fifth informal online campaign coordinated with other Embassies in the US capital, under the #DiplomacyUnited umbrella, an evolution of the “Stockholm Initiative for Digital Diplomacy” (SIDD), launched in 2014 by the Swedish government.

The commitment to the promotion and protection of the principles of equality and dignity of all human beings is one of the priorities of Italy’s action at national level and in all the relevant international forums, including the Human Rights Council in Geneva where Italy sits for the three-year period 2019-2021.
