CoESPU (Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units) semi-annual talks in Washington D.C (December 11-13, 2017)

Washington D.C., December 15, 2017 –­ From December 11 through 13, 2017 an Italian Defense Delegation attended the CoESPU (Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units) traditional semi-annual talks in Washington D.C.

The delegation, comprised of CoESPU Director, Brig. Gen. Giovanni Pietro Barbano, his US Army Deputy, Col. Gary Mann, and other representatives from the Carabinieri Headquarters in Rome, met several authorities at the US Department of State and Department of Defense. Items on the agenda included past and future activities of CoESPU, most of which are held in cooperation with the US. The visit was also an occasion to renew the solid partnership between the two Countries on the stabilization of crisis areas. The conference which developed new ideas and opportunities for future collaboration took place at the Embassy of Italy. Ambassador Varricchio who hosted the delegation at his residence together with members of the NATO Parliamentarian Assembly in Washington for the Annual Transatlantic Forum, recalled the outstanding cooperation between Italy and the US in the security field from Afghanistan to Iraq and in many other areas, highlighting the unique role played by the Carabinieri.

CoESPU, based in Vicenza (Italy), is a training center created by the Italian Government in March 2005, in accordance with the G8 Action Plan “Expanding Global Capability for PSOs. This initiative, sponsored by the US Department of State, is built on the international expertise developed by the Carabinieri. Since its inception, CoESPU has trained more than 10,000 police officers from 112 countries, to be deployed within Peace Support Operations led by the United Nations and other International Organizations.
