Registry of Italians Residing Abroad (A.I.R.E.)

  • What is the AIRE?

A.I.R.E. or AIRE is the abbreviation for “Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero,” which translates to “Registry of Italians Residing Abroad.” Every Italian citizen intending to reside abroad for more than 12 months must register with the AIRE at an Italian Consulate.   • Is it mandatory to register with the AIRE?

Yes, AIRE registration is required by law and is mandatory for all Italian citizens who go abroad for more than 12 months.

  • Can I renew my passport without being registered with the AIRE?

No, you cannot. To access consular services, such as passport renewal, you must be registered with the AIRE.

  • I am coming to live permanently in the United States. Which Consulate should I register with for the AIRE?

In the United States, there is a consular network consisting of nine Consulates plus the Consular Chancellery in Washington DC, each with its respective jurisdictions. The Consular Chancellery in Washington DC is solely competent for Italian citizens residing in the jurisdiction of:

  • the District of Columbia
  • Maryland, only Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties
  • Virginia, only Arlington and Fairfax Counties, the City of Alexandria, the City of Falls Church, and the City of Fairfax

  • How does one register with the AIRE?

AIRE registration is done through the FAST IT digital platform. This service is free.

  • Is it necessary to go to the Consulate in person?

No, to register with the AIRE or update one’s personal data, it is not necessary to go to the Consulate. Everything must be done online through FAST IT.

  • What is FAST IT?

FAST IT is an online portal that allows you to register with the AIRE, communicate a change in consular jurisdiction, or update your address.

  • I am about to register my family on FAST IT. Do I need to create a profile for each member?

No, one registration per household is sufficient.

  • What documents do I need to have ready in digital format for AIRE registration?
  1. The completed and signed request form through the FAST IT portal.
  2. Proof demonstrating actual residence in our consular jurisdiction (driver license or utility bill).
  3. An Italian identification document for the applicant and other family members (birth certificate, passport, or other document proving Italian citizenship). For non-Italian family members, it is advisable to present the passport from their country of citizenship.
  • How do I find out if I have been registered in the consular registry?

You can log into your FAST IT profile and check your registration.

 

AIRE Update

  • How can I update my address?

In the event of a change of address, it is necessary to inform the Consulate through FAST IT by uploading a copy of proof of current residence and a copy of your ID. To find out more, see the section AIRE Address Update.

  • How can I register children born abroad with the AIRE?

Transfer to Another Consulate

  • I am registered on FAST IT at another Consulate, but now I am residing in the jurisdiction of the Consulate of Washington DC. How can I make the change?

To make the change, you must log into your FAST IT profile from the previous Consulate, click on the “Communicate the change of residence” button on FAST IT, and select this Consulate. The following message will appear:

Attention, you are changing your Consular Office of reference. Are you sure you want to continue? By pressing Ok, you will be redirected to the AIRE variation.” By clicking “Ok,” your affiliation will be changed, and you will need to follow the subsequent instructions.

 

Repatriation and Customs Exemption

  • What do I need to do when repatriating?

You need to register with the municipality where you establish your residence. The municipality itself will provide this Consular Chancellery with the official notification of your return and deletion from the AIRE.
