The Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago, the Consulate General of Italy in Chicago and the Design For All – Italia association, in collaboration with the Design Museum of Chicago present a workshop on the role of design in providing people with disabilities access to everyday experiences and the inherent creative and ethical challenges that professionals face as a result in the planning and creation phases.

Tools and methods for performing evaluations, needs assessments, and implementing the necessary requirements to ensure accessibility, social inclusion and equality will be presented in a brief, concise format.

This workshop has been designed to offer a practical approach. Participants will be first invited to simulate the experience of users with physical or sensory limitations. They will then be assigned to evaluate an existing product to evaluate whether or not it satisfies the criteria of accessibility. Finally, they will be asked to create a solution for the challenges noted in the preceding phase, allowing it to adopt the principles of Design For All.

The whole show pays tribute to eight female fashion designers who, after the Second World War played a fundamental role in establishing Italy’s cultural legacy in fashion. They contributed to the evolution of the Italian fashion industry into a major player in the ready-to-wear market.

Each garment will be paired with Flos, Foscarini, Artemide, Kartell, and Baleri Italia creations that will work as microarchitectures to interact and shine light on each dress.
