The Ambassador of Italy in the USA, Armando Varricchio, was received at the White House together with officials from the Embassy and International Financial Institutions to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the foundation of the Republic.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and formerMayor of New York and current attorney of President Trump, Rudy Giuliani, also attended the event, organized in collaboration with the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF).

During the event, Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway, who also has Italian origins, read a message by President Trump. The message highlighted the profound bonds that connect our two Countries and also the paramount contribution given by over 18 million Americans with Italian origin to American politics, economy, culture and society.

During his speech Ambassador Varricchio mentioned the swearing in of the new Italian Government and confirmed Italy’s enduring commitment to strengthening its relationships with the United States. Italy and the United States – continued Ambassador Varricchio – “are united by the same values and ideals that guide our two Countries and that are the basis of our friendship and of the outstanding relations between the two sides of the Atlantica friendship that needs to be nourished and that is continuously sustained by a constant dialogue at all levels and in all fields. The protagonists of this dialogue are the many Americans of Italian origin, who represent a real bridge between the two Allied Countries, two friends.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo intervened to remember the fruitful cooperation between the US and Italy on the most important dossiers: international security and stability, above all. He expressed his wish to visit Rome soon and also highlighted Italy’s constant contribution to American culture.

Presidential Message

Melania and I extend a warm welcome to those visiting the White House for the 2nd annual Republic Day Celebration.

Each year, on the second day of June, the people of Italy celebrate Republic Day. This holiday commemorates the historic vote of 1946, which ended the reign of the Italian Monarchy and gave birth to a new era of freedom and democracy for the Italian people.

Our Nation joins in honoring the Republic Day, and the vibrant history of Italy, as we reaffirm the deep and enduring bonds that link our two countries. Many of the founding tenets of American democracy can be traced to the writings of Roman philosophers and Italian thinkers. We are proud of this legacy and the great Italian Americans who continue to strengthen our country.

Today, many aspects of American life are influenced by more than 18 billion Americans of Italian heritage. As leaders of American industry, selfless warriors on the battlefield, iconic athletes and entertainers, public servants, and some of the greatest minds in the areas of math, science, art, law, and medicine – Italian Americans continue to contribute to the story of American Greatness.

As we come together to mark this truly special day for the people of Italy and the United States, Melania and I send our best wishes to those gathered for a memorable Republic Day.
