Last night, the Ambassador of Italy to the United States, H.E. Marco Peronaci, hosted at the Italian Embassy in Washington, D.C. over 1,100 guests for the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic, which coincides with the important 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n
The reception celebrated science, technology, and the best of Made in Italy. It offered the opportunity to experience an immersive virtual reality experience organized in collaboration with the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics. It allowed visitors to step inside a particle physics experiment and observe firsthand what happens when the fundamental particles of the universe collide at speeds approaching the speed of light.<\/p>\n
Major Italian brands showcased their excellence, focusing on innovation and technology: Lamborghini exhibited three cars in the colors of the Italian flag, and Stellantis presented a vintage Fiat 500 and two “Topolino” cars, also in the colors of the Italian flag. Ducati and Aprilia were present with two racing motorcycles, while Leonardo offered the experience of two different simulators (helicopter and jet). Beretta was also present, with a special commemorative exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of the Brescia-based company.<\/p>\n
The special spacesuit developed by Axiom Space in collaboration with Prada was also on display. The spacesuit will be the one that astronauts of NASA’s historic Artemis IV mission will wear on the Moon. The Olympic torches from the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and Paralympics were also on display.<\/p>\n
The program featured also a celebration of the Italian musical tradition. After the national anthems, soprano Angela Knight and tenor Tony Torchia, two prominent figures of the Washington National Opera, performed two famous arias by Giacomo Puccini, “Quando me’n vo” and “Nessun dorma.”<\/p>\n
Guests had the chance to taste a selection of Italian food and wine and took home photos created with customizable backgrounds highlighting some of the features of the National Day\u2019s program.<\/p>\n
