﻿{"id":5984,"date":"2023-03-31T17:07:27","date_gmt":"2023-03-31T21:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/j-1-waivers\/"},"modified":"2024-09-19T10:00:30","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T14:00:30","slug":"j-1-waivers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/j-1-waivers\/","title":{"rendered":"J-1 Waivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students and researchers who have obtained <a href=\"http:\/\/j1visa.state.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a J-1 visa (Exchange Visitor Program)<\/a> subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement in Italy (the visa must expressly state &#8220;two years rule does apply&#8221; or &#8220;bearer is subject to 212(e)&#8221;) and who wish to extend their research in the United States beyond the two-year period or accept job offers from U.S. entities or institutions must apply for the issuance of a &#8220;No Objection Statement&#8221; at the Embassy of their country of origin or permanent residence in order to obtain the Waiver from the U.S. Department of State (DoS).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italian citizens and aliens holding a long-term Italian residence permit can request a &#8220;No Objection Statement&#8221; exclusively at the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To request the &#8220;No Objection Statement,&#8221; it is necessary to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Submit the application online through the DoS website at the following link: <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/study\/exchange\/waiver-of-the-exchange-visitor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/study\/exchange\/waiver-of-the-exchange-visitor.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Send the following documentation in <u>PDF format<\/u> to the address <a href=\"mailto:J1waivers.washington@esteri.it\">J1waivers.washington@esteri.it<\/a> :<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>A brief request in Italian, dated and signed, requesting the Waiver citing your reasons;<\/li>\n<li>A copy of your passport (limited to pages with personal data);<\/li>\n<li>Copies of all J1 visas (even expired) obtained from the U.S. Government;<\/li>\n<li>A complete and up-to-date <em>curriculum vit\u00e6<\/em>\u00a0<strong>in Italian<\/strong> (CVs in English will not be considered), including contact information;<\/li>\n<li>A copy of the DoS document entitled &#8220;Third Party Barcode Page&#8221; (a single sheet, not the entire packet).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For the issuance of the &#8220;No Objection Statement,&#8221; the average waiting time is 45 working days from the date of receipt of the request or, in case of a request for additional documentation, from the fulfillment thereof.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Requests will be processed, without exception, in the order they are received.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The process is as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After reviewing each request, the office responsible requests clearance from the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR), which normally responds within one month.<\/li>\n<li>Upon receiving clearance from the MUR, the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC\/J1 Visa Waiver Office forwards the &#8220;No Objection Statement&#8221; to the DoS.<\/li>\n<li>The applicant can track the status of the waiver request on the DoS website at the following link:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/j1visawaiverstatus.state.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/j1visawaiverstatus.state.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Embassy of Italy in Washington also forwards waiver requests for Fulbright scholarship recipients.
