For instructions regarding requests for the registration of birth certificates, including those of minors, please refer to the relevant <a href=\"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/nascite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Civil Status (Vital Records)<\/strong><\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passport validity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Passport validity varies based on age:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For minors under 3 years of age, passports are valid for at most <strong>3 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>For minors aged 3 to 18 years, passports are valid for at most <strong>5 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Appointment Booking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Appointments must be booked through the <a href=\"https:\/\/prenotami.esteri.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prenot@Mi<\/a> portal no earlier than six (6) months before the passport expiration date, with sufficient advance notice. Waiting times may be longer before summer and major holidays.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The minor must be present at the Consular Chancellery <\/strong>on the day of the appointment, accompanied by at least one parent.<br \/>\nFor minors aged 12 and above, fingerprints will be taken.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parental Consent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The passport application for a minor must be accompanied by the consent of both parents\/legal guardians. If one of the parents is not present on the day of the appointment with the Chancellery, an official consent form is required.<\/p>\n<p>In cases where one parent or legal guardian refuses to grant consent for the minor\u2019s passport issuance, the other parent can request the intervention of the Consul as a guardian (Articles 33 and 34 of Legislative Decree 71\/2011).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Required Documents for the Issuance of an Ordinary Passport<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/modulo_rilascio_passaporto_minori_rev_2024-03.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Completed passport application form signed by both parents<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Previous Italian passport <\/strong>(if available)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>In the event that this passport would be the first Italian passport, a document proving Italian citizenship is required together with another form of photo identification<br \/>\n(e.g., US passport);<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/modulo_atto_di_assenso_privacy.pdf\">Consent\u00a0form<\/a>:<\/strong> <strong>Required<\/strong> if only <u>one parent<\/u> is present on the day of the appointment with the Chancellery for the passport&#8217;s issuance.<br \/>\nIf one parent cannot accompany the minor to the Consulate on the appointment day, the other parent must present the signed consent form.<br \/>\n<strong>Note:<\/strong> If the absent parent <strong>is a foreign citizen<\/strong>, the signature must be notarized by a <strong>notary public<\/strong> and accompanied by a copy of the passport;<br \/>\nIf the absent parent is an <strong>Italian or EU citizen<\/strong>, the consent form can be signed and presented with a photocopy of the parent&#8217;s passport.<\/li>\n<li>In case of the <u>death of the other parent<\/u>, provide a photocopy of the death certificate;<\/li>\n<li>Two recent passport-sized photos;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/passaporti\/tariffa-consolare-per-il-rilascio-del-passaporto-italiano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Payment in USD of the passport issuance fee<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For special cases not covered in these instructions, contact the Passport Office at <a href=\"mailto:pass.washington@esteri.it\">pass.washington@esteri.it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>February 6, 2026\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Passports for minors i.e. individuals who are not of legal age All Italian minors traveling abroad must have a personal travel document.
