﻿{"id":5274,"date":"2022-11-30T01:26:49","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T06:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/autoveicoli-e-patenti-di-guida\/"},"modified":"2025-04-04T16:22:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T20:22:55","slug":"autoveicoli-e-patenti-di-guida","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/autoveicoli-e-patenti-di-guida\/","title":{"rendered":"Motor Vehicles and Driver Licenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regarding driver licenses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/mae\/resource\/doc\/2017\/07\/Circolare_n13_del22dicembre1997.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Circular No. 107 of October 14, 1997, of the Italian Ministry of Transport<\/a> (text available in Italian) stipulates that, for Italian citizens residing abroad who are duly AIRE registered, the procedure for confirming the validity of the license shall be carried out by the Italian diplomatic-consular authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Pursuant to Article 126, paragraph 9, of the Italian Highway Code (<em>Codice della Strada<\/em>), this Embassy issues to holders of Italian driver licenses who reside or stay within the relevant jurisdiction for a period of at least six months a <strong><u>Certificate<\/u><\/strong> of Confirmation of the Validity of their license\u2014provided it has expired for no more than five years. This certificate, for the duration of the applicant\u2019s stay abroad, serves as proof that the requirements for physical and mental fitness have been verified and, therefore, allows the holder to legally drive in Italy as long as he or she remains a resident abroad.<\/p>\n<p>This Driver\u2019s License Renewal Certificate, like any others previously obtained, must be kept together with the original license and presented to the police authorities whenever requested. The renewal period shall be ten (10) years for applicants up to 50 years of age, five (5) years for applicants between 50 and 70 years of age, and three (3) years for applicants over 70 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>Below is the procedure for renewing an Italian driver license at this Embassy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Schedule<\/u> an appointment for the medical examination with an <a href=\"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/assistenza-ai-cittadini-allestero\/elenchi-dei-professionisti-di-riferimento-a-disposizione-dellutenza-della-circoscrizione-consolare-di-washington-d-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">authorized doctor<\/a> (on the form provided by the Consulate, <a href=\"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/DL-renewal-fill.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>by clicking here<\/strong><\/a>, or on a form from the physician of record). The applicant is responsible for the cost of the examination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Send<\/u> to the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC:\n<ul>\n<li>Clear photocopy of the front and back of the license expired <em>no more than five years ago<\/em> (the original does not need to be sent);<\/li>\n<li>The medical certificate;<\/li>\n<li>Two recent passport-size photographs, taken within the last 6 months;<\/li>\n<li>Money order or cashier\u2019s check made out to \u201cEmbassy of Italy in Washington DC\u201d for the total amount as per the Stamp Duty (<em>Imposta di Bollo<\/em>) + Art. 66D (see <a href=\"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/\">current fees<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>A prefilled and prepaid envelope with the preferred service for returning the certificate (it is recommended to use a traceable method, such as USPS Priority, FedEx), addressed to:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><em>EMBASSY OF ITALY<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><em>Consular Section \u2013 Attn: Passport Office<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><em>3000 Whitehaven Street NW<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><em>Washington, DC 20008<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We remind holders of driver licenses that, upon reacquiring residency in Italy, they must complete the regular renewal procedure (as per paragraph 8 of the aforementioned Article 126 of the Highway Code) within <strong>six (6) months from the date of their final return<\/strong>, even if the certificate received from this Embassy is still valid.
