{"id":14617,"date":"2026-03-19T15:06:53","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T19:06:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/?page_id=14617"},"modified":"2026-04-08T12:10:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T16:10:19","slug":"when-does-this-procedure-apply","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza-2\/cittadinanza-iure-sanguinis-2\/when-does-this-procedure-apply\/","title":{"rendered":"WHEN DOES THIS PROCEDURE APPLY?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This procedure concerns <strong>minor children who were born abroad<\/strong>, who acquired a different citizenship at birth, and who have not automatically acquired Italian citizenship by descent.<\/p>\n<p>The minor, in this case, may acquire Italian citizenship if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>at least one parent is an Italian citizen by birth, and<\/li>\n<li>the parents submit a declaration of intent to the Consular Office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anyone who has been an Italian citizen since birth, even if subsequently recognized as such by descent, is considered an Italian citizen by right of birth.<\/p>\n<p>This category does not include those who have acquired Italian citizenship:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>by naturalization<\/li>\n<li>by marriage<\/li>\n<li>by reacquisition of citizenship<\/li>\n<li>by benefit of law<\/li>\n<li>by <em>iuris communicatione\u00a0<\/em>(i.e. thanks to the communion of rights deriving from marriage)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELEVANT EXCEPTIONS\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interested parties are invited to consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/ambwashingtondc.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/nascite\/\">Births&#8217;\u00a0 section of the Vital Records pages<\/a> (this content is available only in Italian) and, if necessary, contact the Office at <a href=\"mailto:stcivile.washington@esteri.it\">stcivile.washington@esteri.it<\/a> if, at the date of the child&#8217;s birth, one of the following circumstances applies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>at least one of the child&#8217;s parents is exclusively an Italian citizen;<\/li>\n<li>one or both of the child&#8217;s grandparents are, or were at the time of their death, exclusively Italian citizens;<\/li>\n<li>the parent has resided in Italy for at least two consecutive years after acquiring Italian citizenship and before the child&#8217;s birth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The notification must expressly reference which of the above circumstances applies.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that each of the above circumstances must be proven by appropriate official documentation, including, where required, certificates issued by the competent Italian municipality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Last updated: April 8, 2026<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This procedure concerns minor children who were born abroad, who acquired a different citizenship at birth, and who have not automatically acquired Italian citizenship by descent.
