Washington DC (December 17, 2019) – Great result last night at Villa Firenze, official residence of the Italian Ambassador to the USA, during a Gala evening organized for the #AmericaLovesVenice campaign, launched by the Italian Embassy in Washington in partnership with Save Venice, the main American non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the artistic heritage of Venice.

During the evening 44.750 dollars were raised, in addition to the over 382.000 dollars already donated since the launch of the campaign. The sums collected will finance restoration projects following the damage caused by the recent waves of bad weather that severely affected the city of Venice, its citizens, its artistic and cultural heritage and its commercial activities. The fund-raising campaign launched on November 20, immediately after the State of Emergency declaration by the Italian Government, and after the initiative launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will be used for immediate and concrete projects: from the purchase of submersible water pumps, to installation of flood barriers in churches, museums and historic buildings, from the restoration of musical scores of the Conservatory, to the repair of the lower registers of the façade and courtyard of the Ca’ d’Oro on the Grand Canal.

The campaign will continue in 2020 with initiatives that will involve the Italian diplomatic and consular network and institutions in the US in order to support Venice and the Venetians in these particularly difficult times.

“I am grateful to Save Venice, to the many American friends, and to the various associations representing the Italian-American community. They immediately responded to the appeal launched by Save Venice and the Embassy to support the city of Venice. Their generous contributions testify to the very strong bonds of friendship that have always united our countries. Such initiatives contribute to renewing and strengthening our ties” – said Ambassador Armando Varricchio.

Frederick Ilchman, Chairman of Save Venice, said: “We are not surprised and indeed deeply moved that Venice holds special meaning for so many Americans who have generously moved to protect the city’s artistic and cultural heritage. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, we thank Ambassador Varricchio for his leadership in championing this urgent cause”.
