Italy – United States: Former FBI Director now a Citizen of Italy

Former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Louis J. Freeh is now an Italian citizen. At the helm of the FBI for eight years, Mr. Freeh acquired his Italian citizenship in an official ceremony in which he swore allegiance to the Constitution before Italy’s Ambassador to the USA Giulio Terzi.

In explaining the motivations for the citizenship Ambassador Terzi recalled Freeh’s work to ‘preserve security’, particularly ‘in the fight against organized crime’ and underscored that because of his close bond with Italy, the former FBI Director always acted in ‘open cooperation with Italy’s major law enforcement agencies’.

Louis Freeh’s Italian ancestry traces back to his maternal grandfather who came to the United States in 1870 from the province of Avellino.
