Columbus Day. Ambassador Armando Varricchio participates in the virtual events organized in New York and Washington.

On the occasion of Columbus Day, the Ambassador of Italy Armando Varricchio participated in the two traditional events, organized virtually, by the Columbus Citizen Foundation in New York and by the National Christopher Columbus Association in Washington DC. In his two messages, the Ambassador underlined the importance of Columbus Day as an occasion for celebration and reflection on the rich Italian and Italian-American cultural heritage in the USA.

The Ambassador recalled the important contribution made by the Italian and Italian-American communities to the success of the United States in all fields: from politics to economics, from science to culture. “A community – underlined Varricchio – that is a lively and integral part of American society, proud of its ties to the country of origin, and that contributes to the strengthening of bilateral relations between the United States and Italy”.

These relations have their roots in the shared values of freedom and democracy. Their strength and dynamism were confirmed again in this year marked by the pandemic that has hit Italy and the USA.

The exchange of information, the sharing of health protocols and the numerous manifestations of solidarity on both sides of the Atlantic have been fundamental in managing together the response to the pandemic and testify to a relationship that is unique in the world.

President Trump acknowledged in the traditional Columbus Day Proclamation that the “United States benefits from the warmth and generosity of nearly 17 million Italian Americans, whose love of family and country strengthen the fabric of our Nation.”
