Coronavirus. Ambassador Armando Varricchio joins a conversation with David Harris, CEO of the American Jewish Committee.

Washington, March 27, 2020. The Ambassador of Italy to the United States of America, Armando Varricchio, participated in a conversation on the Italian response to the COVID-19 with the CEO of the American Jewish Committee, David Harris.

The conversation took place via Zoom (with over 400 listeners) and was broadcast live on the AJC Facebook channel (with more than 4000 people connected) and touched on the main aspects of the Italian response to the Coronavirus emergency. Ambassador Varricchio, in thanking the organization for the solidarity it has always shown towards Italy, retraced the most significant decisions taken by the government to deal with the emergency. Varricchio underlined in particular how these painful measures are unprecedented in the history of the Italian democracy and recalled the courage and determination of his fellow citizens, especially the men and women on the front lines to counter the spread of the virus and save lives.

The Ambassador then mentioned the various manifestations of solidarity coming from all over the world and, in particular, from the United States, which is currently suffering from the spread of the virus in the US. From the Armed Forces, to the many private American companies that made donations worth a total of 12.5 million dollars, American support came quickly.

“The spread of the Coronavirus is a difficult test for the whole international community and for our democracies, for the solidity of the European Union and for the transatlantic bonds. We must work together and join forces to overcome this common challenge. Not only our public health but that of our democracies is at stake” said the Ambassador, recalling “how important it is to also strengthen international organizations and multilateral instruments to face similar challenges in the future.”

In response to some questions, Ambassador Varricchio underlined that “Italy is grateful to all the friends who provided support and collaboration but proudly belongs to the family of democracies. There should therefore be no concern about the geopolitical collocation of our country”.
