Reception on occasion of Italian National Day at the Embassy of Italy in Washington D.C. (May 30, 2019)

Washington DC, May 31, 2019 – Yesterday, the Embassy of Italy in Washington DC opened the celebrations of the Italian National Day in the United States of America. More than 1800 people sharing their fondness for Italy attended the traditional reception at the Embassy’s prestigious headquarters. The event was attended by representatives of different branches of the American Administration, as well as representatives of the political, economic and cultural landscape of the Capital, several officers, both Italian and from other countries, of International Financial Institutions and of the Organizaton of the American States, and many American citizens who proudly claim an Italian heritage.

After the national anthems, performed by a choir of Italian children, Ambassador Armando Varricchio recalled that “the future of our societies rests firmly on the pillars of democracy, freedom, rule of law, justice, and our unabated and continued work to uphold and advance human rights at home and abroad. Rome and Washington are – the Ambassador continued - inextricably linked. As are Europe and the US destinies.”

The Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross represented the United States at the event and recalled the deep friendship binding our countries and our peoples. Also in attendance, Kellyanne Conway, Counselor to the President, and Andrew Wheeler, Administrator Environmental Protection Agency.

In the next days the celebrations of the Italian National Day will move to Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and San Francisco. On Monday, June 3rd Ambassador Varricchio will join the celebrations in New York, after the traditional race “Italy Run” that will be held on June 2nd at the Central Park. The marathon is organized every year in collaboration with New York Road Runners. The Consulate General of Chicago will close the celebrations on June 4th, hosting a concert with soprano Elisabetta Russo accompanied by pianist Roberta Terchi Nocentini.

The event in Washington has been supported by many sponsors and private partners who, united by a strong passion for our Country, offered to the guests an overview of contemporary Italy, a cradle of tradition, innovation, and high technology.
