On July 27 at 6:00 pm the Italian Cultural Institute (IIC) will host The Italian Girl in Algiers (L’Italiana in Algeri, 2013, 153 min), the first opera of a special screening series dedicated to Gioachino Rossini thanks to a collaboration between the IIC and the Rossini Opera Festival (ROF) in Pesaro, Italy. This exuberant Swinging 60s-based production shows Italian director Davide Livermore alive to all the comic possibilities. Soprano Elisabetta Russo, baritone Roberto Perlas Gomez and pianist Vladimir Khomyakov will offer two inspiring live performances, one to kick-off the series and another to close.

The series will feature 5 screenings of ROF productions which are all free and open to the public with mandatory RSVP. The screenings include Cyrus in Babylon (Ciro in Babilonia, 2012, 165 min) on August 2, The Thieving Magpie (La Gazza Ladra, 2007, 201 min) on August 9, Matilde of Shabran (Matilde di Shabran, 2012, 220 min) on August 23 and the closing screening of The Turk in Italy (Il Turco in Italia, 2009, 165 min) will also feature a brief live performance.

Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Los Angeles (IIC)

Founded in 1984 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to promote Italian culture in Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. The IIC organizes Italian language courses and events in collaboration with numerous local institutions with the goal of presenting Italy in all of its cultural richness: architecture, cinema, design, literature, music, science, theater and the visual arts.

Rossini Opera Festival

An international lyric program entirely dedicated to Gioachino Rossini and held every summer in Pesaro, the birthplace of the composer from the Marches. The festival completes restoration, theatrical return and study of the musical patrimony related to the name Rossini.

Elisabetta Russo – Soprano

Russo studied at the renowned "S. Cecilia" Conservatory in Rome as well as with director Alberto Zedda at the Accademia Rossiniana di Pesaro. She won Best Female Vocalist at the Hollywood Music Awards in 2011 and was a winner of the Beverly Hills Chamber Music Competition in 2014. She has performed internationally and collaborated with prestigious conductors, directors and composers.

Roberto Perlas Gomez – Baritone

Filipino-American baritone Roberto Perlas Gomez has performed his extensive repertoire of over ninety roles with many of the international and regional opera companies throughout the United States. He performs many of the leading baritone roles in French and Italian opera.

Vladimir Khomyakov – Piano

An award-winning pianist, Khomyakov has performed extensively internationally. In 2016, Khomyakov completed his doctoral degree (DMA) at the University of Southern California in piano performance and instrumental conducting with maestro Larry Livingston.
