During his first visit to the United States and the United Nations, the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery yesterday.


Maj. Gen. Bradley Becker, Commanding General Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and U.S. Army Military District of Washington, greeted the President who laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, and visited the grave of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

In the afternoon, the President visited “Power and Pathos: Bronze sculpture of the Hellenistic world” and the Italian collection at the National Gallery.


President Mattarella is meeting the President of the United States, Barack Obama at the White House today. Following the presentation of the two respective delegations, the two Heads of State will hold talks.

In the afternoon, the President will visit the Italian Embassy and meet with the Italian community.

Tomorrow, February 9, after having breakfast with Vice President Joseph Biden, President Mattarella will meet the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Capitol Hill. Later, he will meet with members of the Italian American Congressional Delegation.

After Washington, D.C., the President’s following stop in the United States will be on Wednesday, February 10 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where the Head of State will hold talks with the President of the General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft and Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. President Mattarella will also visit the Permament Mission of Italy to the United Nations and meet with Italian officials working at the United Nations.
In the afternoon, he will visit Ground Zero and the 9/11 Memorial, and later greet the Italian community at the Guggenheim museum.

On February 11, President Mattarella will deliver an address at Columbia University, and then visit the Ellis Island Immigration Museum.

On February 12, the Head of State will fly to Houston, the last stop of his visit to the United States, where he will visit the Johnson Space Center and meet with Italian astronauts.
