Permanent relocation to Italy

Permanent relocation to Italy

If you are registered with Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero (AIRE) in our Consular district and intend to permanently relocate to Italy, do not forget to inform our Consular Office.

In these cases, the Consular Office can release a customs clearance declaration for personal effects at your request.

Applicants must submit the following items using the forms at the bottom of this page:

  • a list of personal effects with their estimated value;
  • brand and serial numbers for electronic equipment;
  • a valid Italian passport;
  • U.S. permanent residence permit, visa, or U.S. passport.

Items travelling with the Italian citizens who are permanently relocating to Italy are exempt from customs duties, provided that the length of residence abroad for work purposes was at least twelve months before relocation. This assistance is also granted to the spouses of Italian citizens residing in Italy who move to Italy within six months from the date of marriage.

Upon arrival in Italy, interested parties should:

  • establish the family’s residence in a municipality of your choosing;
  • enroll family members at the local Health Authority of the same municipality to obtain medical and health care.

The assistance provided by the Consular Office for permanent relocation is free of charge.
