EU open house day


USA – Italy: European Union Embassies Open House Day, 6000 people visit the Embassy in Washington

Washington DC (May 8, 2010) -- The European Union Open House Day which celebrated Europe’s 60th anniversary, the so-called ‘Schuman Day’, witnessed record high numbers. Over six thousand people visited the Embassy of Italy to view an exhibition on the made in Italy brand and to support the campaign to promote the spread of the Italian language in the United States.

Among the main attractions of the day were the prototype of the electric Fiat 500 and the new Piaggio hybrid scooter, highlighting the theme of this year ‘Green Europe: Good for the Economy and the Environment.’

The European day, which by now has become a permanent event for all of Washington’s EU diplomatic corps, has brought over six thousand people to the Embassy transforming it into a true piazza in the US capital, with long lines at the entrance and tastings of Italian wine and food (once again there were bottles of Brunello on the tables of Americans).

To welcome the visitors was Ambassador Giulio Terzi with his family and all of the Embassy’s personnel. They provided guidance to the many Americans that were curious about the stands and works of art inspired by the eco-sustainability theme.

“The Green economy – explains Terzi – is greatly expanding in the United States under the current Obama administration. That is why this year we chose ‘green mobility’ as our theme, a sector which is at the forefront in Italy.”

Aside from the 500 and the Vespa, the ‘green’ bicycle that was presented at the Summit on the environment in Copenhagen was also on display, as were the new Trenitalia ‘Frecciarossa’ and models of the eco-sustainable homes by architect Mario Cucinella. Everything was under the slogan ‘I love la lingua italiana’.
