Registry of Italians Residing Abroad (AIRE)

NOTICE: NEW PENALTIES FOR FAILURE TO REGISTER WITH A.I.R.E.

 

The Registry of Italians Residing Abroad (A.I.R.E.) is the registry of Italian citizens who reside outside of Italy.

The AIRE was established by Law 27.10.1988 no. 470. AIRE registration is a right and an obligation.

Italian citizens MUST register with the competent consular office within 90 days of changing their residence.

The Consular Chancellery forwards the information to the Italian municipality, where it is recorded.

 

THOSE WHO HAVE TO register with the AIRE

  • Italian citizens who intend to live abroad for more than 12 months
  • Italian citizens born abroad and who remain abroad
  • Those who acquire Italian citizenship abroad

 

THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE TO register with the AIRE

  • Italian citizens who go abroad for a period of less than 12 months
  • Seasonal workers
  • Italian state employees in service abroad
  • Italian military personnel in service at NATO offices and facilities located abroad

 

Reasons for registering with the AIRE

  1. Access to consular services (registration of marriage and/or birth of children, certificates, passport renewal, renewal of Italian driver licenses, and more)
  2. Voting in political elections
  3. Obtaining or renewing a travel document
